SAND FILTRATION FOR AN INGROUND SWIMMING POOLS: An Oldie But Goodie; BUT TRY GLASS
Sand Filtration, for inground swimming pools, is the oldest type of water filtration. Employed by the ancient Greeks and Romans to filter water from the bathhouses, gravity was used to pass dirty water through a bed of sand before it was returned to the bath.
In a sand filter, dirt particles are caught between the individual grains of sand, while the oily substances cling to the grains. Most sand filters are capable of trapping particles as small as 20 microns, but this number changes as the sand becomes increasingly dirty through the filtration process. Up to a point the contaminants that begin to coat the sand particles can improve the efficiency of the filter. However, there is a point of diminishing returns, and eventually the flow of water is restricted. It is then time to backwash the filter to remove those trapped contaminants.
However, if you use GLASS particles, which are made from ground up beer and wine bottles, in your sand tank filter, you increase the filtering capacity down to as low as 2 microns, instead of 20 microns for sand. It also requires less backwashing which is a 25% savings on water charges. GLASS lasts 10 years in the tank as opposed to 3-5 years for sand. And its environment friendly, as it is made from 100% recycled glass products. I have been installing GLASS filtration in my customers pools for over 10 years, with great pool-water filtering success.
