INGROUND VINYL POOL BUILDER IN SOUTH JERSEY discusses steel for pool construction
INGROUND VINYL POOL BUILDER IN SOUTH JERSEY discusses steel for pool construction:
Vinyl pools are constructed using steel walls to form the shape of the pool. Most steel used in vinyl pools is galvanized steel or also known as zinc coated steel. The steel is manufactured from sheets of galvanized steel, by bending it and cutting it to a size and shape, forming a pool panel.
The panels are bolted together and placed in the ground, with rebar and braces. And then a concrete footing, known as a collar, is poured around the wall panels to hold them in place, in the dirt.
Sometimes these panels are 8 feet long and 42 inches high. They are manufactured as straight panels, curved panels, and other shapes also. Cutouts are made, in the steel, for the skimmers, lights and return fittings. But where these cutouts are made, the galvanization, which is a zinc coating, is lost on the edges of the cutouts. This leaves bare metal edges, with no galvanizing. And that is where rust and corrosion starts on the finished and installed panel once it is in the ground.
In an effort to stop corrosion, a manufacturer in Pennsylvania does something extra to the finished galvanized steel pool panel. They spray a polyester powder on to the electrically charged panel. Then this powder-coated panel is baked in a 400 degree oven. The powder-coat is then permanently bonded to the galvanized steel pool-panel. And all of the edges where cutouts were made, are now coated with this powder coat finish. This powder-coated pool panel is now protected from rust and corrosion, after it is installed in the dirt of the pool excavation.
