INGROUND POOL HEATING To Save Energy and Money
Inground pool heating can be accomplished while saving energy and money.
Energy efficiency is a hot topic everywhere these days. For inground pool owners, the perfect solution would be a way to maintain comfortable waster temperature, while conserving energy and saving money.
According to NESPA, “The Northeast Spa and Pool Association”, whether you have an existing inground pool, or are building a new one, energy conservation can be accomplished with a combination of solar covers, aka solar blankets, reduced horsepower pumps, and piping.
One way to keep heat loss and evaporation down is to use a solar blanket or cover. It can reduce water loss by 30 to 50 percent, and reduce heating costs by 50 to 70 present. An added benefit is that reducing water loss also reduces the amount of chemical treatment required, which is a good chemical cost saving over the season.
Another product that reduces evaporation is a liquid solar blanket. This tasteless, odorless chemical is simply added to the inground pool once a month to prevent evaporation. The product is completely safe, and about half as effective as a roll-up safety blanket.
Design engineers have found that by using larger pipes and changing 90-degree pipe fittings to a curved sweep-pipe fitting, less horsepower pumps are needed to pump the pool water through the system and filter. That opens the door for smaller, high efficiency pumps. For new inground pools this design offers a 40 to 50 present reduction in energy use compared to traditional designs.
Another way to save is by using two-speed pumps or variable-speed pumps. When the inground pool is not in use, you run your pump at the lower speed for a longer time, but you will definitely save on power-use and money, and the longer run-time will filter the pool water at the lower speed.
