As a South Jersey pool builder, I Have found in addition to getting rid of the chlorine smell, saltwater is gentler on your skin. The biggest advantage is health and maintenance. Chlorine tablets, also known as tri-chlor tablets or hockey pucks, contain harmful impurities, which many people react negatively to. Salt can alleviate this, as the pool owner can eliminate the use of chlorine tablets. As a  pool builder of vinyl liner pools, I have found that there’s less of a need to shock the pool, and less bleaching of bathing suits and the vinyl liner.

Also, as a South Jersey pool builder, I have found that salt use saves my clients about $300 to $400 per year, based on salt-prices in our area. A 20,000 gallon pool might need 11 to 12 bags of salt on initial installation of the salt system, but then it will only need a few bags a year after the initial pool build. Salt costs approximately $5.00 to $6.00 per 40 pound bag.

Look for salt that’s 99.4 percent pure and doesn’t have rust inhibitor or other additives.

You will have to check your salt cell, every couple of months, to see if any scale has built-up on the cell plates. This is very easy to do.
